The energy-momentum tensors for quantum electrodynamics and quantum chromodynamics are obtained through a systematic and consistent application of Noether's first theorem. When the transformation properties of the spinor and vector fields are properly accounted for, the energy-momentum tensor is automatically symmetric in its indices and invariant under the expected symmetries (e.g., BRST invariance).
